When I started down this evil path, I tested D-76, XTOL and Microphen
at various dilutions. I think I threw some Rodinal in there too. I
made prints with my enlarger head maxed out onto 8x10's, as well as
full-frame 8x10's. The XTOL clearly had the best "enlargeability"
factor. At 8x10 they all looked good, but I liked the XTOL prints
best. They appear sharp and grain seemed reduced. So far I've found it
to be good with just about every film I've tried it with, except the
super fast ones.

Since then I've also played with PMK, DD-X and FX-37 and still prefer
the XTOL.

Shel makes a fair point, there have been some complaints about XTOL
"crapping out", but I haven't heard a first hand account of it in a
while (3 years?), and Kodak did seem to find the problem - bad
packaging.

It's also perfectly clear when mixed and fresh, so I wonder if some
folks didn't just develop with water...

IAC, I consider it a secret ingredient.
