I did just this last weekend:

1. I bought pre-cut wood in a construction outlet (35cmX10cmX0.5cm
each).
2. Small nails were good enough to put them together in less than half
an hour
with some glue to make it stronger.
3. The bottom was made of a very thin (less than 0.5 cm) piece of wood.
Same
nails and glue. First made the box, then drew the shape on the board and
cut.
4. For the lights, two fluorescent tubes in the center seem to do just
fine,
separated about 15cm from each other.
5. The glass is quite important: an opaque glass, cut by an "expert" did
the
job.

I totally agree with the "don't make it too big" comment. Four the size
you mention, maybe three tubes would be necessary.
It woks just fine! And making it was fun too.
