The government has admitted that its plan to reinterpret the special
Brexit arrangements for Northern Ireland will break international law.

The Northern Ireland secretary, Brandon Lewis, astonished backbenchers
when he told the House of Commons: “Yes, this does break international
law in a very specific and limited way. We’re taking the powers to
disapply the EU law concept of direct effect … in a certain very tightly
defined circumstance.”

Setting ourselves up as the country you really can’t trust seems an
eccentric way to launch a new era of global dealmaking.

Our negotiator, meanwhile, is David Frost, whose Downing Street call
sign is “Frosty”. Are you familiar with David? He has the look of a
Guildford-based Jaguar dealer prepared to pull the kids out of private
school to fund his court battle against his ex-wife. (“Let’s see how she
likes that.”)
