After three service calls in two years because of deteriorating copper in my neighborhood I switched my landline from Verizon to my cable provider. I still have that landline for three reasons:

1) Because it is part of a three-way bundle with my cable TV and my broadband I would pay more for just those two than I do for the bundle.

2) It is nice to have a working phone if my call phone dies (I live alone so I can't borrow a cell phone from another family member).

3) I still have one customer whose transmitter site is controlled by an old remote-control system. Making programming changes to that system from home is easiest with a Windows program that uses the computer modem to send touch-tone commands to the transmitter site unit. That won't work with my cell phone.
