Good to see you both.  I ended up paying just over £1800 for a 
one-step-up-from-bargain-basement macbook.  You can imagine my joy when I saw 
an equivalent spec Dell PC for £220.  All for some poxy software that she is 
having problems using as her version is much newer than the university's...
