Hey Protel'ers,
One thing I can say, especially if you are considering building a new machine for serious production work -- invest the extra couple bucks in a motherboard which has REGISTERED memory. Registered DDR RAM is usually only slightly more expensive than standandard RAM, but has a full 8 bits of parity-correction added for every 64-bits of memory; this means that unless the memory error is extremely severe, the memory management hardware can usually autocorrect (and then optionally report) the error seamlessly in the memory read cycle. At least if you crash and burn because of a system memory error, you will generally know it! This generally removes RAM as a cause of system problems.
I have been running on a SuperMicro server-grade motherboard (X5DAL-TG2) with 2GB registered RAM for nearly a year now, and (save for a single issue with NVidia drivers for my Quadro4) I have NEVER had this machine freeze or randomly reboot on me. (knock on wood!) I usually have DXP open, along with a dozen different applications, for DAYS on end, and have never had a problem. Sometimes Protel will get slow and require the occasional program restart, but generally nothing worse than that.
This system cost a bit more than your average system to build, but I feel the >99.9% uptime and reliability I've had with it justifies the extra money.
Anyhow, just some stuff to think about! I'm not a DXP whiz, so I usually ask more questions than I can answer, but at least I'll step up when I can!
