Hi Brad, Okay looks like it has been resolved. I checked in Preferences and the x,y co-ordinates for both fields was set way off somewhere ie no 0,0. I have neve worried about this in the past because I assumed (idiot) that the Auto-place of Centre-Above and Centre-Below would override everything. This it does when you apply a change to some parameter for the item but only if it is not hidden. Now with this set to 0,0 for both fields, my components are placing with the fields close to the part (slap bang in the middle to be precise) although I still have to kick the part to get the Auto-place function to take over.
I recall a thread awhile ago related to `parts' being off the page or even out of reach and I can easily imagine that if I place one of my older parts near the edge of a worksheet that I would `lose' at least one of the fields. Doing a global Auto-place with the fields NOT hidden has been the only way to bring everything back in to `scope' Thanks for the feedback (and everyone else who responded) looks like I will be working with Protel 99SE for a bit longer (although my work situation is about to force a leap to Altium Designer now - doh) Best Regards (Mr) Laurie Biddulph Mobile: 0404 846 943 Elby Designs ABN: 70 022 727 605 http://www.elby-designs.com This e-mail and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended for the addressee only. I would suggest that you look at the following. Where are your parts located with respect to 0,0 in the library? Do you have some small line, text or other item way off away from the part? The designators will locate themselves relative to the extents of your footprint. When placing these components the Designator and Part Type fields are always a long way off from the component unlike the footprints that were supplied with Protel. What do I need to do to the footprint to force these fields to start initially next to the footprint? I know that, once applied, I can reposition using the `position field' (which by the way already defaults to Centre-Above and Centre-Below) but this has to be done with EVERY homemade footprint I have created.
