I agree with Gisbert Auge, we need a means to set the default paper size globally as a user option.
It would do no good to the overall user community to have a fixed, unchangeable global default either to Letter or to A4. Whichever would be selected, people on one side of the ocean or the other will continue to waste a lot of time.
