Thanks all for the input. You have made me brave enough ti try and copy some of the files over to my xp box, which also has 99SE on it, although I haven't fired up that box in just about as long as the laptop.
Backup? Backup? We don't need no stinkin Backup! Yeah sure. I actually probably do have backup of all of my critical files, as I emailed them all out, and I have about 3 gig of email, which includes the copy cc'ed back to my self with the attachment (not very efficient for keeping the email storage size down), which is also not backed up. I would think that all of the original files on the Laptop are actually good, since they are all write protected, but back them up I will, probably to CD ROM. Now that I think about it, I believe I actually made a copy of the entire drive before I swapped out the motherboard on the laptop, including all of the Protel files. I think I am going to start by installing 99SE on this machine, which I use for email, which is a PIII 450 Mhz. I actually do have all of the files backed up on a seperate drive, but unfortunately, the drive they are on is fried, and I tried to read it on 3 different machines, and blew the disk controllers on all 3 machines, so I have set the drive aside for now, so I don't destroy any more mother boards. Anyway, installing a fresh copy here will be the least likely place to incurr damage, and if things work ok here, then I can do a reinstall on the laptop. Two additional things that might be a problem are these: It just occurred to me that I also installed DXP version 3 on the laptop, but it has co-existed with 99SE there in the past without problems. The other thing I was thinking about was something that I came across while I was searching my own archives here in my email, and that was an issue regarding memory usage in win2k, where someone had a couple of flakey solder connections on some of his memory connectors, and while I have swapped out the motherboard, I have not ruled out yet another flakey DIMM connector. Oh joy ! ! ! I have CD ROMs for Protel98, Protel99SE SDK, Protel99SE Trial Version, all manner and revision of DXP, going all the way thru Protel2004, but no Protel99SE or Camtastic2000 (which I always keep together). I guess I have my work cut out for me for the weekend. Anyway, thanks for the responses, which at a minimum eliminated my fears.
