Bill,

Thanks, I see the distinction now. I guess they decided to be crystal
clear by adding "distance" to the clearance. Surprisingly, though I had
thought of clearance as being a self-evident term referring to the
distance between two objects/etc, it ranks only third in the definition
list I just found at Answers.com and a couple other online dictionaries,
past "A space cleared; a clearing" and before (abr) "authorization"...

Thank goodness I just checked Wiki, where sure enough, (whew!) first on
the list is

"in engineering and safety, (Clearance is) a physical distance or space
tolerance, as in a truck (lorry), train or boat under a bridge as well
as a train in a tunnel (see structure gauge and loading gauge)"

Personally, I still think it's a self-evident term when used in this
venue, due to its connotative nature (we are in an engineering arena
after all) and we're neither talking about our ability to work on black
projects nor the freakishly expensive, "loverly", tres chic shoes our
girlfriend wants to buy at the after Christmas sale, but I suppose I can
grudgingly concede the overly clarified phrasing in the UL reference.
IMO it's clumsy English, but infinitely less annoying than "A apple" or
"I acksed a question"

Hey, Wam, that's the difference. Me, I would just say clearance and be
done with it. (In fact, on a bad, day, though it's highly doubtful such
a circumstance would ever present itself to such a gentle and diplomatic
soul as moi, I might possibly maybe even give someone a hard time for
using the word distance with it...nah ;) A lawyer, on the other hand,
gets REALLY specific.

Regards,

aj
