Peirce was a synechist, not an atomist, especially with respect to
qualities. Given any two qualities embodied in *actual *things, no matter
how similar they might be, there is an inexhaustible continuum of *possible
*intermediate qualities between them. The "positive simple immediate
quality" of an "esthetically good" object can be *analyzed *into various
constituent qualities, but it is not *built up* of them.
