true, not only did the women not want to leave, many of the men didn't either.
In the earliest settlements of Jamestown, many of the indentures (who were
both European and African -- slavery came later) ran away to live with the
Indians who treated them more humanely.  Captured indentures were hanged to
stop other indentures from seeking an easier life with the "savages."
