Charles,
Actually, Czechoslovakia was the only Central
European state to have a functioning parliamentary
democracy throughout the interwar period. Arguably
democracy thus began with independence at the end
of WW I. It was interrupted by the Nazi takeover, ended
by a combination of the Red and US armies (the latter
withdrawing westward later), only to be interrupted again
when Klement Gottwald seized power in 1948.

CB: I'm talking about after the war starts, not inter war period. No homegrown
fascists in Czechoslovakia ?
