Rostow's view was that only "one-stage" difference (in degree, not in 
kind) existed between western capitalist & Soviet development at mid-
point of 20th century.  He thought that latter was technologically &
psychologically ready to enter *mass consumption* society but that
political state investment in military & heavy industry would be 
obstacle.  Guess some would say fact that SU no longer exists proves
his prediction that *evolution* towards mass consumption could not
be held up indefinitely.      Michael Hoover
