I am not sure I see how this creates a huge turnout for Romney, if that was your view. I do see that it can reenergize the AFL throughout the midwest who now have a target they can focus on in the wake of the Walker debacle.
On the other hand a Rubio pick would have avoided an unnecessary battle with labor in the industrial heartland and possibly opened up the SxSW. The minute the word "fiscal" gets spoken people drift off and that seemed to be exactly what happened during Ryan's speech today. The last guy to run on an austerity program was someone named Jimmy Carter. And the last successful ticket without a southerner on board (assuming we count Obama as a southerner in light of his natural connection to the large black population there; and Delaware is of course as far south as W. Va.) was FDR and Henry Wallace.
