It is not surprising that the leaks are coming from Russia, they have an
interest in providing leaks that will embarrass the US and EU in Ukraine.
Similar motivations will have been behind their giving sanctuary to Snowden, or
the leaked phone call between the EU foreign minister and the Estonian premier
about the current govt in Keiv being behind the snipers.

Why does this matter?

1. Because the left should as a matter of course attempt to expose the lies
used by our foreign offices in their imperial plans. The opposition on the web
can be effective. The new media opposition to the official media line on Syria
prevented a repeat of the Libyan colonial adventure last year.
2. Because this particular imperial adventure has the prospect of leading to a
catastrophic war. The echoes of 1914 are there. If the case on which such a war
would be based is not challenged from the outset the danger is worse.
3. It is a mistake to think that opposition to imperial adventures is just
something that only the left is concerned about. Edward Heath the former
conservative prime minister opposed both the Gulf and Iraq wars, explicitly
denouncing them as imperialist adventures. In the commons last week, the only
MP that I heard make the obvious point that the people of Crimea by a clear
majority wanted to leave the Ukraine was a conservative. Right up to the last
days before Aug 4th 1914 a substantial portion of the Liberal party was opposed
to war.

Putin's already twice indicated that he would prefer to see her win the May
election rather than Klitschko or Poroshenko.

They've gotten along fine in the past, as you can see:

Tymoshenko's conceded she made the call, but denied using anti-Russian
epithets. You can choose to believe Tymoshenko or the Russian secret service.
Some choice.

What a rat's nest of entangled kleptocrats and politicians on both sides of the
border, and across it. How anyone can get so worked up about this conflict
between capitalist Russia and the capitalist alliance of Ukraine/EU/US is
beyond me. Whatever the outcome, you can be certain it won't improve the living
standards or personal freedoms of working class Ukrainians and Russians.
