Yanukovytch was popularly elected, a trait he shares with the Presidents of
France,n Russia, Venezuela, an the USA. This distinguishes him from heads of
state that are not like the President of Europe or the King of Spain. It does
not indicate that Yanukovytch had anything politically in common with the other
elected presidents other than the mode he came to power.

Electing a head of state is a very limited form of democracy, but if there is
to be a head of state popular election is probably the most democratic way of
doing it.

When either left or right commentators hostile to the coup in Ukraine emphasise
that Yanukovytch was elected, they are just emphasising that this form of
appointment has more democratic legitimacy than the process by which the
current rival claimant to the Ukrainian presidency got there.
