As an undergraduate at the University of Michigan, where the game was invented,
I began playing paddle ball. In grad school at Berkeley, I took up handball
and then racquetball, which I continued with in Chico until my knees started to
hurt. So I switched to basketball at 25 years ago. I played against the play
professional ball, one who had 10 days in the NBA. At the University now, the
range of skills is very wide, with a few of play professional ball and the
members of the college team. The other day I bragged about being the best
74-year-old player at the gym. A student corrected me and told me I was the
worst 74-year-old player at the gym.

I cannot believe the enjoyment I get, especially when I make a three-point shot
against somebody who is never played against me before and he screams, "what
the F*"

I have been heard a few times. A shattered collarbone was the most painful, but
on the whole, playing with people more than 50 years younger than me is a real
hoot. I understand what as the is talking about.

Same here. I began playing it at Bard College and continued for another
20 years until my partner left the city. The game has a fascinating origin as a
recreation for British convicts who used a rolled up rag as a ball. The sound
that it made as it hit the prison yard wall (SQUASH) gave it its name.
