All other considerations aside, playing to win is an ethical obligation for anyone engaging in a competition. Not doing so is an insult to one's opponent and an injury (or undeserved assistance) to other participants in a tournament-style event. Not to mention that the spectators are cheated. For a long time, for instance, the greatest scandal in chess was the frequency of "grandmaster draws."
