The problem is that none of the American radicals Foner mentions, with the single exception of Debs, was a socialist. Neither is Denmark a socialist country. Socialism does not mean an advanced welfare state or the regulation of capital. It means the replacement of capitalist ownership by social ownership of the major means of production and exchange. The fact is that Bernie Sanders is not talking about socialism, democratic or otherwise. His program is indistinguishable from that of any welfare-state liberal. Jim
