I'm not privy to Apple's thinking, and I doubt that anyone else on this 
list is, either. So we can only speculate. My own speculation is that 
it's overdetermined, as most things are. There's a need to put the focus 
on the big bad Fibbies in order to distract from their own mis-,  mal-, 
or non-feasance -- take your pick. Then too it's not a bad marketing 
gimmick to pose as the paladins of privacy, which of course they never 
have been.

In general, I suspect it's a serious mistake to imagine that any large 
corporation has a substantive interest in the privacy of its customers. 
Perhaps the Swiss banks are the exception that proves the rule -- 
because their important customers are among the elite?
