If cul-de-sacs are all we have, we're in big trouble. I'm not into postmodernism, so I don't see theoretical thoroughfares as necessarily futile or hubristic. At least one can try to find a thoroughfare out of this jungle, rather than simply giving up.
This is a conversation it would be better to have face to face but I don't think my speculated absence of thoroughfares leaves simply giving up as the only alternative. The way I see it is a little more humility about what can be accomplished cognitively, a little more trust in the inherent (even if not absolute) friendliness of the universe and a lot more attention to how to draw that friendliness to the surface. Or to put it differently, to recognize that no theory is worth much without practice but that an exemplary practice can redeem even a limited theory. Ommmmmmm. ;-) -- Sandwichman
