It's a very old practice and predates the use of sandwichboards for
commercial advertising. My reading is that there is a residual 'shame'
to the practice of such advertising. The bearer of the two boards also
carries an "unwritten" -- but all too legible -- label proclaiming, "I
am a derelict." This is why I claim the sandwichman as the projected
shadow of the ideology of success.
