I finally gave up when they killed my father (another CIO and FDR
man). I had "quit" many, many times and shifted from cigarettes to
cigars to pipes and back and forth. Also, I put cigarette ads around
a picture of Jesse Helms over by my regular easy chair, where I did
most of my serious stinking up of the house.

When I got down to it, it wasn't really so bad. I highly recommend
the gum. Like Carrol, I've never looked back. It's been ten years
and, although I haven't been able to avoid putting on weight, I'd
rather have to deal with that the effects of smoking.

Ditto the Democrats. Only, unlike tobacco, they don't necessarily
kill the user...though the Democratic equivalent of second-hand smoke
can be seen across Iraq and Afghanistan. A hell of a price to make
young people pay for your addictions....
