Other than the fact that CPAN used to assume that `make` was always
involved and doesn't auto-upgrade, exactly how is Module::Build a pain?

Well, trying really hard without reading the instructions often leads to
frustration.
It would be nice if CPANPLUS didn't insist on pretending that
Module::Build doesn't exist. Note that it is quite aware that things
are about to go wrong.
[ERROR] [Mon Oct 15 18:31:47 2007] This module requires
'Module::Build' and 'CPANPLUS::Dist::Build' to be installed, but you
don't have it! Will fall back to 'CPANPLUS::Dist::MM', but might not
be able to install!

Introducing change is like pulling off a bandage: the pain is a memory
almost as soon as you feel it.
