Greetings, all.
I've just spent last week at the Australian Linux and Open Source Expo
and Conference. While there, I spent three days talking to people about
Perl training. One thing because blindingly apparent to me: people want
certifications.
Now, I don't want to get into the argument of whether of not
certifications suck. I think we all realise that certification schemes
measure the trainee's ability to pass a multichoice test, no more, no
less.
However, if there *were* to be a Perl certification, I'd want the Perl
community to be the people developing it. So, this is a call for
interest in an LPI-style Perl certification program.
For those who don't know what LPI is, see http://lpi.org/ ... but
basically, the Linux Professional Institute is a body which was set up
to develop platform and distribution independent Linux certifications.
It has a board of directors, some paid staff (including educational
experts), and community mailing lists where anyone can contribute their
ideas and thoughts.
As a first step, I've set up an interim mailing list on our server. To
join it, visit http://netizen.com.au/mailman/listinfo/perlcert/ I'm
hoping that the list will be used to discuss general ideas and get the
early stages rolling if there's enough interest, and that we can move it
to its own domain if/when it takes off.
Looking forward to some lively discussion....
K.
