Sorry? I don't think GS perl came with more modules than ActivePerl.

And you may install modules both from PPM and from CPAN as you did 
with the GS perl.

Being standard doesn't mean that it has to contain everything.

Could you explain to me in plain words what did the GS perl have that 
ActivePerl does not?

P.S.: To the failed instalation, I bet you do not have proper path to 
your C libraries. Open ...\perl\lib\Config.pm and search for 
"libpth=". Then put there the path to the .lib files of your 
compiler.
