My £0.02:
This seems to me to be a big non-issue. perl5 src always has been, and
will continue to be, 4-char indent with tab being shorthand for 8 spaces.
We happen now to have annotated the files so that popular editors can set
the mode correctly for each file (handy if you also work on other projects
with different rules, eg parrot). Most people in the past seem to have
been able to submit patches that maintain the existing indentation, and I
don't see why this might change. Invisible space at the end of the line
is harmless.
