Much as I hate the notion of di- and trigraphs, this is a possibility. Though I'd much rather we just allowed POD escapes (e.g. E<laquo> and E<raquo>) in code. And, yes, I'm aware that makes E<laquo>*E<raquo> incredibly ugly. I'm rather *counting* on it, in fact ;-) Damian
