Hi Doug, I agree with the complaints you listed:

For me, pure familiarity - I've used PGPLOT through PDL for nearly a decade(!) and PLPLOT seemed a pain to learn. But, having seen the development progress in PLPLOT, I'm going to see if I can tweak it so that it puts out plots that I like. It's been a long time since I tried it.
