Tim -

It looks like AST uses autotools.  Is this correct?  If so, we should expect
it to build on most OSes that have the Bourne Shell, which means Cygwin,
MSYS, Linux, Unix, and Mac.  MinGW will give trouble, as well as Windows
with VC++.  Do you know which environments your users use?  Have people
successfully built on Cygwin?  What about MinGW?
