Hi David, I have never understood what the draw was to Strawberry. ActiveState
is pretty solid for people to simply install Perl, get modules that work if you
have no idea how to do it yourself (me!), or to install them using CPAN - the
cpan module is included as is cpanm. I am pretty sure that I have built and
installed modules that I have downloaded as well using the cpan interface.
Doesn't this allow the same flexibility? If someone is having problems building
modules, isn't it likely that it is because they don't fully understand what
they need to do? Even installing on Linux. I have tried to build PDL from CPAN
and I never get it right. The best way for me is to do the apt-get install pdl
and then go into cpan and do the upgrade /PDL/. All of the dependencies are
accounted when I do it this way. When I install from cpan I always end up
missing dependencies. Example on Windows is that this last time (last year) I
installed using the uwinnipeg repo and it properly installed the PGPLOT
dependency - I didn't even know until Rob pointed out that the GrWnd version
was the one from the uwinnipeg repo so obviously not the one I built
previously. The first time I ever tried getting PGPLOT to work on Win32 was
several years back and I had to install the minGW environment, and get it
functional and then try to compile the GrWnd files. It took a while, especially
since I only get time to work on it in chunks due to my "real" work. If I had
known about the uwinnipeg repo then, it would have saved me a lot of
frustration.

So am I the minority of target users (people who use PDL and don't have a clue
at how to create their own PP modules) in not being able to get it to install
from cpan directly? When I use R/scilab/matlab - I use modules when ever I can
because it would take me weeks more time to develop a script. On the other hand
if your target user is a C++/Perl expert, then please disregard the above as it
doesn't apply.

Hi,
I tried to build PDL from source. The point is that if some is missing (e.g.
OpenGL) related modules are not built.
Is it possible to get what is missing instead, to build the full PDL , once
satified?
Thanks

Hey Fabio,

You might want to read this wiki page:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/pdl/index.php?title=Installing_PDL_Manually

Or look at http://pdl.perl.org/?page=install and click on "The latest version
of PDL"

BTW, I noticed that the Windows instructions on the
pdl.perl.org<http://pdl.perl.org> page do not mention Strawberry, which is a
shame because it works fine with Strawberry. Anybody have the round tuits to
fix it?

David
