For a brief time, PDL had a hard dependency on POGL, which thus had a hard
dependency on any Open GL libs that would be required. If 2.4.7 (which is
the current version in Ubuntu) has that dependency, then this would explain
why your approach was easier for current Ubuntus (and, likely, current
Debians as well).
