I contacted Dr. Jeff Lloyd who is a wood expert and mycologist. His reply 
is as follows:


   - Yep is mold, maybe *Aspergillus* but too out of focus.  Is on oak and 
   from end grain which is mildy interesting – perhaps wet inside but surface 
   dry for a period of couple weeks.  Check the wood moisture content and 
   museum RH and assuming it is *less than* 19 % and 70 % respectively and 
   will remain so it will not grow back and you can just clean it off.
