Hi, long time lurker here. :)

I contacted Dr. Jeff Lloyd who is a wood expert and mycologist. His reply is as
follows:

  * Yep is mold, maybe Aspergillus but too out of focus. Is on oak and from
end grain which is mildy interesting – perhaps wet inside but surface dry for a
period of couple weeks. Check the wood moisture content and museum RH and
assuming it is less than 19 % and 70 % respectively and will remain so it will
not grow back and you can just clean it off.
I hope this helps!

I checked with some contacts I have in the wood preservation industry. It’s
definitely not mold, but also is unlikely to be a wood preservative. Perhaps
it’s from a stain, urethane, or lacquer or something like that.

It definitely looks crystalline. It also has a bit of greenish tinge. I wonder
if the wood was ever treated with a copper-based preservative.

It looks like a salt crystal to me, not mold. It might be a flake of old
lacquer residue.

Hi Chelsee,

It doesn't look like mold to me. Normally mold has a bushy appearance when
examined up close due to the hyphae. You can try gently brushing the surface
with a cotton swab to see if it rolls onto itself or, if inactive, it will
brush off the wood into a powder. You can also try using a UV light to see if
it illuminates. Some molds will have a white illumination.

Hope this helps! It's hard to tell of the close up but the substance looks like
it may be a fatty material like wax.

Hi all,

I know this might not be exactly the right venue, but I wanted to reach out and
see what you all think. We had a wood object come into the museum, and it has
some places on the back where I think it might have been moldy. I know that
wood can also ‘bloom,’ but I am not sure which it might be…
I know it is hard to tell in photos, but I appreciate any insight that anyone
can offer.

Thank you so much!
