Hi, long time lurker here. :) I contacted Dr. Jeff Lloyd who is a wood expert and mycologist. His reply is as follows: * Yep is mold, maybe Aspergillus but too out of focus. Is on oak and from end grain which is mildy interesting – perhaps wet inside but surface dry for a period of couple weeks. Check the wood moisture content and museum RH and assuming it is less than 19 % and 70 % respectively and will remain so it will not grow back and you can just clean it off. I hope this helps! You can try gently brushing the surface with a cotton swab to see if it rolls onto itself or, if inactive, it will brush off the wood into a powder. You can also try using a UV light to see if it illuminates. Some molds will have a white illumination. Hope this helps! It's hard to tell of the close up but the substance looks like it may be a fatty material like wax.
