Hello,

I would like to highlight a couple of important considerations:

  1. Beyond the facility's licensing costs, what additional expenses might
arise for any licensed individuals?
  2. Is your facility prepared to absorb the extra costs associated with
insurance? In the event of a spill or exposure, who would assume liability?

We currently utilize a licensed pest control company that is licensed, bonded,
and insured, which mitigates our risk in such scenarios. They are onsite M-F
and they handle all inspections and treatments. All treatments and products are
approved by our Risk management team and treatments only done on days when our
campuses are closed to the public to reduce the possible risk of exposure.

I hope these thoughts help in your decision.

Have a great day.

Subject: [PestList] Re: Internal v External Pest Control/Treatment

Hi Leslie,
I am jumping onto your thread because we are in a very similar situation at my
institution. We are going through the early steps of the process of gaining
licensing to procure chemicals and certification to treat our building and
storage areas.

I am unsure about TX, but in CT the license is good for 5 years but is somewhat
costly. There is required reading and a test that covers the basics of pest
control and identification, but like you, I wonder and worry where we will be
in terms of response and action and if there are certain things we will miss.

This year we started logging pests/traps via conserv app to double check our
current contracted pest controller's notes and that has gone well, but we still
lean heavily on them for course of action and treatment. They simply have the
field experience we lack, and it can be tough to make calls without that
knowledge base.

Subject: [PestList] Internal v External Pest Control/Treatment

You don't often get email from

is important<https://aka.ms/LearnAboutSenderIdentification>

Hello all,

Our Director of Facilities is wanting to explore bringing our monthly pest
control treatment in house. We currently use a third party for regular
monitoring and treatment throughout our public and back of house spaces,
including our collections storage spaces. He wants to cancel that contract
and have his team handle the regular pest control treatment.

My initial reaction was sure if the right certifications and training are
secured. But now I’m concerned about response and expertise for any issues
including infestation. What other questions, concerns or arguments am I
missing? Any other private institutions (we are not s city nor a state museum
nor are we associated with an university) that do their own pest control? I
welcome all insight or thoughts you may have!

Thanks,

Leslie
