Dear Leslie,
t goes without saying that when you handle—meaning touch, move, reposition,
et similia—objects of great artistic, historical, or social value (often
transcending mere economic worth), you assume a significant responsibility.
You are responsible for safeguarding the object itself and preserving its
current value—particularly its artistic, historical, and social
significance—but above all, its even more critical future value.
My decades of experience tell me that the Logistics Sector—heavily driven
by the economic targets set by the organization—unfortunately fails to give
sufficient weight to those other values, which far surpass purely economic
considerations. This is a major, indeed almost universal, problem.
I would add that the nature of daily operations often leads the Logistics
team to believe they can handle anything; they fail to grasp the
distinction between, say, a standard rodent control treatment for building
basements and the specialized treatment required for cultural heritage
assets. The latter demands broad-based knowledge and extensive, specific
experience.
In your case, I suggest it would be vital for the organization to have an
IPM (Integrated Pest Management) Manual and Protocols in place. This
document should outline the processes, methodologies, responsibilities, and
roles involved in the conservation and protection of the organization’s
cultural heritage assets and collections.
