It is always worth checking with local universities to see if they have projects on mould or air quality projects. (Geology, Chemistry or biological science usually contact us) This is a similar project I know of: http://www.tcd.ie/Library/preservation/research/sold.php I would always push for wipe samples, as air ones can include other spores that are not the cause of the outbreak. I don't see the lack of a sample from before the outbreak as an issue, they can still help with identification of the type of mould, (and if it's a health concern) or if it is speu http://alaskawhitestuffid.wordpress.com/2011/08/09/leather-and-skin/ "migration of fats/oils through the leather material that crystallize on the surface in the presence of air." Air sampling will only give you information on what has accumulated in the air (if this is what you are looking for, use this method). Not all spores are easily released into the air, some have a mucous film around them and will be transported to a new habitat by adering itself onto something (e.g. insects). You will not easily detect such kind of spores by air sampling. Hence surface sampling with a sterile cotton swab, scalpel blade, or sterile velvet -depending on the Kind of surface- is the most appropriate for surface sampling Best, Stefanie Liebe Grüße, Stefanie Scheerer _____________________________________________________________________ Dr. Stefanie Scheerer Mikrobiologie & Restaurierung http://www.biophil-art.com/ tel. 0711-91275899 Von: Appelbaum & Himmelstein <aa...@mindspring.com<mailto:aa...@mindspring.com>> An: pestlist@museumpests.net<mailto:pestlist@museumpests.net> Gesendet: 17:45 Dienstag, 2.Juli 2013 Betreff: [pestlist] sampling for mold This is a message from the Museumpests List.
