I thought I might just jump in here to share my experiences:

On Red Hat Linux 8.0, my system would seldom stay up for more than an hour after installing the latest nVidia display drivers. After a short while, the display would turn to garbage and the system would be completely locked up.

hmm, that would drive me up a wall -

As you might guess, I have reverted to the XFree86 nv driver, and use Windows for games.

How sad -

Maybe it's just me, but I've had good luck
with the nvidia driver as long as I compile
it on the system for the kernel that's running.
(OK, I know it's just compiling a wrapper...)

Oh, and using the in-kernel AGP driver - I
have seen lockups with freinds who used
the nvagp, and/or installed a binary RPM of
the nvidia kernel driver -

I'd much much rather see a solid OSS driver
though, since it's a hassle to recompile the
nvidia drivers any time I upgrade the kernel -
not to mention it'd be more convenient for
Aunt Bessie not to have to recompile....

Best Regards,

me from experiencing the joy of 2.5 kernels
