It that with 3123 or the newer ones? Many people myself included had problems with the latest ones. Not only the Gnome thing, but just overall much less stable. For a desktop system the two things I would suggest on 8.0 or grab 2.4.20 and try 3123 if you haven't. Just upgrading the kernel alone made a noticable difference on my system any many others.
