-1 on this.  We have a configure script for a reason, why do we want to
take away it's usefulness?

I'd rather see the end user decide if they want to enable a capability,
keeping everything disabled until they say so.  I'm not a real fan of
enabling everything by default (which is what is happening).

Now if you were to modify the --with-pear option to force zlib to be
included, thats a different story.  That would get a +1 from me.
