Sorry to be a pain.  I didn't use apxs, I installed apache and php from
source using a devshed.com recipe.

No. Assuming you installed apache-module of php using apxs then
recompiling 
php and 'make install' will automatically "do the right thing". There is
no 
need to touch either MySQL or Apache.
