A couple of years ago there was a mirror device offered on eBay that would fit on the front of Rolleiflex TLRs so you could face one way and the viewing and taking lenses were capturing the scene 90 degrees away. Apparently it was designed for spies. But, like you said, it seems pretty obvious...
