When I took Alan Greene's pinhole photography class, he brought in a
homemade lens camera and showed us how he takes a lot of his photos. He
would sit down at a coffee place or something, put the camera on the table,
surreptitiously take a meter reading, and while looking in another direction
he'd remove the lens cap and put it back on. (Although, carrying a black
box around might draw more attention these days than it did last year.) In
any case, it was pretty funny watching him show us how to be sneaky and get
these sort of candid images of people. He didn't ask for permission since
the figures were never recognizable in the finished images anyway (since the
shutter speeds were so slow). He had some neat images of conversations -
the blurred figures and clear backgrounds showed this movement that made it
feel like you were watching an actual conversation or something.
