Sarah, I have had several contact printers myself and you remember them the way I do Mine had a switch under the latch so that when the top is closed the white light would come on. My reccomendation would be to add a toggle switch to the side of the box and turn on and off the white light with it. I really never liked the control of the light being in the latch switch.
