Yes, someone has decided to block it for some bizarre reason.

Still, a traceroute or the like should give you a hint as to the latency involved.

Unfortunately not. As soon as the packets cross the border of our corporate network, no useful information is returned any more, just anonymous "* * *" :-).

Maybe I'll try to install a local pkg.opensolaris.org mirror for inhouse usage. I just didn't find the instructions to do this yet.

This isn't fully supported yet for /dev releases; only for "major" releases such as 2009.06 found in the /release repository.
