This is a tiny change which simply aliases dir to directory for search
so that pkg search 'dir::' works as expected.
The only question I have is what happens if the query is stringified?
Will it return what the user originally provided, or will it have been
transformed?

Have you checked the packagemanager GUI to see if this breaks search in
it possibly?
