I think the state we want to be in is that "dir" is the real index name and (at most) "directory" is an alias. The code should reflect that. I'm also happy with breaking people now, particularly for such a small thing. We can always make sure the release notes contain a note saying that you need to do a full reindex, but that typically happens on a build-to-build upgrade, anyway.
