Perhaps I can make a suggestion for the p5p format.
If you make it so that the version somehow easily appear from the
file, with
an HTTP HEAD operation or whatever, and then allow the client side to
store
per-package url information easily, it could be useful for vendors
who have
only 1 or 2 software packages, to more easily offer to their
customers an
auto-update capability for IPS packages.
I don't understand how this improves things over either the existing
pkg.depotd, or simple HTTP access to a custom Apache instance as
described above.
If you *have* ability to run your own pkg.depotd, then thats fine and
dandy.
You're misunderstanding. The solutions presented here do not involve
running a pkg.depotd daemon.
But I thought the p5p format was designed to help out people who dont
have that ability easily.
It is, but there are intentional tradeoffs in what is currently
supported for access.
That brings us back to my original question, which I didnt see anyone
directly address:
Is there no longer any plans for oracle, or an affiliated entity, to
provide a more open site, to allow third-party entities a space to host
their IPS packages, in a proper repo?
I suggest placing an inquiry with your Oracle sales representative.
