If you make it so that the version somehow easily appear from the file, with an HTTP HEAD operation or whatever, and then allow the client side to store per-package url information easily, it could be useful for vendors who have only 1 or 2 software packages, to more easily offer to their customers an auto-update capability for IPS packages.
The p5p format was actually designed with that case in mind -- you can look at the original design proposal sent to the list or at the design document in the pkg(5) gate. But that option too has significant tradeoffs -- remote search isn't possible, and performance tuning becomes more difficult as it complicates HTTP caching.
However, at this time, that work has not yet even been prototyped, so an evaluation of that solution still needs to be done to determine if it is a viable approach.
